In this ticket you can see how this dedicated-server hosting company combine different incompetencies:

  • a total absence of technical competence to resolve a simple issue like setting up the system date or checking how much memory a server is consuming (they never learned this, I had to learn it on my own by visiting web forums). The technical staff simply knew less than I did, and I was obviously new to managing a linux server.
  • billing errors that could lead to your servers being taken down, and
  • the inability to fix for months the billing errors they had made.

Mysql on my new server

Author Contents
Clemente Zamora Ramos

Posted on 05 Jul 2006 03:23 PM

Mysql seems not to be installed on my new server, even though I was
told it would be. At least there is no mysqld file in /etc/init.d or
/etc/rc.d/init.d

Am I missing something here? If it is installed, then please let me know how to run it.

Also, I have noticed that the server clock is set to GMT+7. Isn’t that a weird time zone for us?

Thanks a lot.

Posted on 05 Jul 2006 03:44 PM

You can install Mysql via Webmin. access webmin like this

64.251.14.49:10000

GMT+1 should be your setting.

Good Day

Clemente Zamora Ramos

Posted on 05 Jul 2006 06:52 PM

I had already tried starting Mysql from Webmin. This is what I get:

Failed to start database :

sh: /etc/rc.d/init.d/mysqld: No such file or directory

This shows what I mentioned: the missing startup file.

And, yes, GMT+1 should be my setting, but it isn’t. That’s what I meant.

The server tells me the date is:

[root@sp2830a ~]# date

Thu Jul 6 07:52:08 EDT 2006

when my local time is 00:44 GMT. This is not right.

Thanks a lot.

I installed mysql server.

you can install additional software with the command.

yum install what-you-want-to-install.

also I installed system-config-date to configure your server time, just type as root system-config-date

Thank You.

Clemente Zamora Ramos

Posted on 21 Jul 2006 06:45 AM

Hi,

system-config-date is used to set the time zone, but that was correct.
What is incorrect is the clock setting. It is around 19 hours and 8
minutes wrong.

Let’s see if I can explain this so you can understand it:

if you sit next to the server and type ‘date’, and then you look at
your watch, you will see the times do not match. They should.

Could you please fix this?

I have tried hwclock, set the hardware clock correctly, and then
rebooted. But both the system clock and hardware clock are wrong again.
The system clock should not be set while the server is running (please
don’t do that), but it should read the time from the hardware clock at
start up time. But the hardware time does not seem to get set correctly
(it doesn’t look like a time zone problem, because there is an extra 8
minutes mismatch!)

I don’t know what else to do.

After a week, my server still has a serious memory leak, the
applications do not link properly, and even the clock is wrong. I would
expect a new server to at least have the clock set up correctly.
Please, please set the clock to your local time, or to Pacific time,
whatever is easier for you.

Thanks a lot.

SP1422

Posted on 21 Jul 2006 07:11 AM

The hardware clock is set to the hardware manufacturers local time.

To set the hardware and software clock use this command:

#date [MMDDhhmm[[CC]YY][.ss]]

I set the date and restarted the server, and after teh rebot it stil reports correctly.

[root@sp2830a ~]# date

Fri Jul 21 08:09:40 EDT 2006

[root@sp2830a ~]#

As for the memory leak we can repalce the hardware, but we have no other reports of this software image having such problems.

Let us know if you want the hardware replaced.

Thank you

Clemente Zamora Ramos

Posted on 24 Jul 2006 02:10 PM

Thanks.

If you could set me up the new server and show it doesn’t suffer from
memory leaks, then I could move everything from my current server to
the new one without causing more down-time.

I would appreciate that very much.

SP1435

the customer service has to approve that.

you will have an answer tomorrow.

Clemente Zamora Ramos

Posted on 29 Aug 2006 02:59 PM

I never got the promised answer.

My server continues to suffer from a memory malfunction, as it is always using 99% of its RAM memory.

It is now more important that I know I can get servers without memory
leaks from you, because I will be needing to add extra servers to my
pool.

Please let me know if you can provide me with memory-leak-free servers.

Thanks a lot.

I’m sorry, what is a leapfrog server? And how much work will it mean to
maintain my sites active during the process?
SP1435

Posted on 30 Aug 2006 09:39 PM

with leap frog you maintain 2 servers at the same time for 3 days
untill you move your data to the new one, then the first one is removed.

Thank You.

So, at the end I’m on a new server, right?

How is the IP transferred? Or is it changed, and if so, do we have to change DNS or BIND?

Clemente Zamora Ramos

Hi,

are my questions difficult? or is there any other problem with this ticket?

Thanks.

SP1423

Posted on 01 Sep 2006 12:52 AM

Clemente,

We apologize for the delay in response, however Customer Service is not monitored 24×7.

When you have completed the migration, the new IP will be assigned to
the new server and any and all DNS changes need to be requested once
the IP has been migrated.

Clemente Zamora Ramos

Posted on 01 Sep 2006 06:35 AM

Ok, let’s proceed then.

Please make sure the new IP is not listed in anti-spam services (e.g http://spews.org), like my current one.

Please let me know when the new server is set up.

Thanks a lot.

PS. I hope I won’t be charged for this as all this trouble is to fix a
problem that was on the server from the beginning and that I have been
suffering for two months now.

Thanks a lot.

Before doing anything on the new server, I checked the memory usage,
and I’m afraid this server is also suffering from memory leaks. Before
initiating any applications, or doing anything, I started checking
periodically the memory with the ‘free’ command, and I noticed the free
memory decreased in some 4.5Mb in 6.5 hours. As I said, this is without
any running applications (later on I started up httpd to check if that
modifies anything). Here is my first session on the server, where you
can verify what I’m saying.

All packages other than Webmin are what is available on the Operating
System Manufacturers website. You can remove Webmin with #rpm -e webmin

I can suggest you perform an update with the following command:

#yum -y update

If the problem persists I recommend going with a more up-to-date
version of the Operating System. We currently offer Centos 4.2 and 4.3,
we will offer 4.4 in the near future.

I don’t understand your reply. It’s not me who has to fix the server.
You are offering it as a solution to a deffective server that
ServerPronto hired to me, and this new one is also deffective. Please
just provide me with a server which does not have memory leaks so that
I can use all the 500Mb I’m paying for. Am I asking for too much?

as to the OS manufacturers instructions. We have tried different
hardware. The issue is either with a package that is enabled by the
manufacturer and may have a bug track on it, or a bug that is
unreported. Your options for an alternate OS are detailed above.

I don’t think we did. Not at least referring to the leapfrog server.
Remember that this is a server you are setting because you gave me a
deffective one you are unable to fix. If you are saying that I’m on my
own to fix this leapfrog server, what is the use? That’s like saying
all your servers are deffective and I have to work to fix them. Is that
the case? Please let me know.
